The Lady of Situations [userpic]

13: MCMXIV - Larkin.

April 13th, 2005 (10:26 am)

MCMXIV by Philip Larkin

Those long uneven lines
Standing as patiently
As if they were stretched outside
The Oval or Villa Park,
The crowns of hats, the sun
On moustached archaic faces
Grinning as if it were all
An August Bank Holiday lark;
And the shut shops, the bleached
Established names on the sunblinds,
The farthings and sovereigns,
And dark-clothed children at play
Called after kings and queens,
The tin advertisements
For cocoa and twist, and the pubs
Wide open all day;
And the countryside not caring
The place-names all hazed over
With flowering grasses, and fields
Shadowing Domesday lines
Under wheats' restless silence;
The differently-dressed servants
With tiny rooms in huge houses,
The dust behind limousines;
Never such innocence,
Never before or since,
As changed itself to past
Without a word--the men
Leaving the gardens tidy,
The thousands of marriages
Lasting a little while longer:
Never such innocence again

Harry Potter RPG character poll!

Another poll. This one is about Harry Potter RPG Characters, as played on LJ. For Harry Potter RPGers, designed for a mixture of scientific interest and nosiness.

This is to be filled in on behalf of your characters, and ideally using their character journal (so, you know, you can be really helpful and fill it in for every LJ Harry Potter character you play). Characters and entities from all corners of the Potterverse are welcome - results will be published in due course! Should be interesting, and also settle a few bets.

Many thanks. Please comment with suggestions/outrage/additional answers.

This is just a friendly poll on journalling habits, created to satisfy my curiosity in the course of discussions held this weekend. If there's anything else you'd like to add (suggestions for future questions), please do so in comments. The results are currently viewable only to me (for the protection of those taking the tests) - I am harmless, and will almost certainly forget what is told to me anyway. Am trying to get an overview of what journalling habits are like at this moment in time, on my flist and beyond. I'll publish the results in due course, without names if so wished.

Poll #462154 Poll on Journalling Habits

The gig was simply ridiculous.

The Majestics were, you know, probably passable about 30 years ago.
The Cycles looked like they might all be brothers and had certainly Got It Right - pretty, talented and I suspect very driven frontman, lairy guitarist, fit bassist and supremely brilliant drummer having his own private party at the back.

And Tom's band turned out to be METAL. Fook you, and so on. Moshing (ugh).Wanted to shriek at the farcical nature of it all - you see that guy with his shirt off? Was having a playfight with plastic swords in Lucy's kitchen on Saturday - but didn't. Tom in disgrace for his behaviour at the end.

Cox's full of freaks. Most of them I knew. Rabies, Eardley, that awful Maria Cridland, Hannah Sergeant, at least six girls who could have been Maggie. The mixed crowd sort of a buzz at the beginning, by the end I wanted to come home.

Wonder who won? (was battle of the bands).

Anyway. Icon a reminder of serenity.

Finale RPG
Finale RPG at LIVEJOURNAL

Finale RPG is a Trio-era game begun the summer before Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts. Sirius Black (infamous Azkaban escapee, suspected hero) is dead, the Ministry is in disarray, and the Order is gearing up to fight a political battle along with the guerrilla attacks being waged by Lord Voldemort and the Death Eaters. Students started the school year unsure what would become of Hogwarts since the attack at Platform Nine and Three-Quarters in late June, and they find themselves just as uncertain now.

Currently in Finale, Viktor Krum is missing. Students are returning to Hogwarts after the holidays, attempting to have some semblance of a normal life. However, thanks to the Daily Prophet (and various other publications), it is beginning to dawn on most wizards that war is here.

- - - - -

The Game: We have a cast list of over 60. Our players are friendly, experienced, and creative. The game is democratically-run (no mods, but a team of dutiful house elves eager to do the players’ bidding), which means all players vote on new applications for the game, big plot developments involve everyone, mass hysterical ramblings are frequent, and so on. Each voice is heard, let freedom ring, and you get the gist.

We like to employ the phrase “in the spirit of the books” as opposed to “canon.” No teen pregnancies or drug deals at Hogwarts; however, magical accidents and occasional pranks are always an option. And then there are the random posts from the Giant Squid demanding affection from redheads and blondes. ...Yeah, we don't know, either.

One final note: We are not a wholly dark RPG at Finale, nor are we wholly light. We are the mixture of both.

That being said, Finale is currently seeking: BELLATRIX LESTRANGE, the Weasley twins, Cho Chang (Quidditch Captain), Marietta Edgecombe (Head Girl), Colin Creevey, and more!Collapse )

Thoughts on re-reading Philosopher's Stone...[SPOILERS]

November 27th, 2004 (08:10 pm)
curious

current mood: curious

SPOILERS (but surely we've all read THIS one, by now)

McGonagall continues to perplex me. In the opening scene between her and Dumbledore, they actually seem to have a much colder relationship than I remember/seem to have imagined via fandom. There's much less of the warmth than I expected. Dumbledore's very flippant, which makes me rather like him - re-reading it in the light of OotP (i.e. knowing, as he must, about the Prophecy), you can imagine the amount of adrenaline he must be running on by the time they drop Harry off at the Dursleys. McGonagall obviously has the utmost faith in him, but there's no... intimacy. Also, her blushing and giggling when Hagrid kisses her is something I'd totally forgotten.

What happened to the school song and why don't we hear it again? Personally, I didn't like it. I also thought that the "Potter for President" banner was amusing (odd to think of someone like Ron using such a term).

Thanks to jkrowling.com we know that Dean originally had a much larger part in PS, but in the surviving text it's Seamus who looks like he'll be the more important character. Seamus, I have to say, is love. He's this wonderfully talkative little boy who tells everyone about his family (fascinating circumstances - could he be the Halfblood Prince?), looks after Neville and pops up in asides about twice as often as Dean (winking at Harry, for example, in the first Potions lesson, lending him his wizarding chess pieces). Considering how he behaves later in canon (siding against Harry in the whole DP debacle), I'm starting to understand why he has such a canon following. He's the connoisseur of girls, remember (isn't it him who makes the remark about the Patil twins being the best-looking in the year?). He's love.

There's also a reference to the Weasley twins having found a secret passage out of the school "in their first week of school". Have other student characters found this passage (the one behind Gregory The Smarmy), and what do they use it for?

Is Dedalus Diggle going to acquire a greater significance in canon than he has in OotP? After Albus Dumbledore and McGonagall, he's the first wholly magical character we hear mentioned by name - with his shooting stars in Kent (KENT ohgod he is just so perfect), lack of sense and habit of frequenting Muggle supermarkets. Add to the fact that he has a purple hat (I almost wrote purple voice then, yay synaesthetes), BOWS to Harry and gets yet another cameo in the Leaky Cauldron, I feel he must be more important than JKR is letting on. Also, he is definitely our queeniest OCC so far.

Also, I may have elskegaderian's Neville on FA to blame for this, but I swear Neville was never this camp.

Other random questions:
Where are the fics about Lee Jordan's pursuit of Angelina? // Why did I not realise just how much I adore the Weasley twins? // If I've died and been reincarnated as a R/Hr shipper, wouldn't it have been polite for someone to tell me? // Harry/Neville. I now ship it. Why? Who else does? // Quirrell. Any fics containing his backstory? // IS it Flitwick who hugs Vernon Dursley around the waist the day Voldemort is defeated? // Seamus plays chess. Are there any Ron/Seamus fics which deal with this? Yay checkmate-innuendo! // If students are allowed to bring an owl OR a cat OR a toad to Hogwarts, why is Ron allowed a rat (yes yes, I KNOW it's Pettigrew, but why not say that rats are allowed? Oversight?)
